Your body is supposed to repair mitochondria overnight but it might not work well with older people, so eat these three. Signals to do the repair get weaker with age.
The process we want to occur is called mitophagy.
Eat these three foods before bed to help this natural process work. Timing matters - 60 to 90 minutes before bed
Walnuts contain two compounds that activate mitophagy. Swiss study. Also rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Eat 6 to 10 walnut halves (may soak in water first)
Tart cherry juice (not the sweet kind). Melatonin levels increase and protect cells. Support mitochondrial biogenesis. Also inhibits oxidative stress. PGC 1 Alfa. Drink 4 to 8 ounces of 100% tart cherry juice which you can dilute. Note: pomegranate juice is a good substitute.
At least 85 percent dark chocolate (made from cacao). Also contains magnesium which is needed for ATP synthesis. Also contains tryptophan and polyphenols and activates AMPY. 3/4 to 1 1/2 ounces. Can melt and mix with chopped walnuts.
May notice better sleep quality.
Should feel better each morning within the first month.
Have more energy and subjective improvements will be noticed.
Recover faster from exercise.
Will mess up your fasting window if doing time restricted eating (intermittent fasting), so if you are, eat with last meal of day.
You could take supplements instead. Better when you get from whole food because of what else is in them.
If blood sugar problems, dilute tart cherry juice or use supplement.
